IEC 63435:2025 defines the characteristics of operator support systems (OSS) intended for use by control room personnel, maintenance engineers and emergency response teams. It establishes overarching principles for the OSS lifecycle and specifies OSS design requirements in accordance with a human factors engineering (HFE) programme. The document also provides human factors guidelines and sets out verification and validation (V&V) requirements for OSS design.

This standard applies to new nuclear facilities whose conceptual design begins after its publication, and it may also be used as a design reference for OSS in existing nuclear facilities.
