IEC 63230:2026 governs reaction turbine runners irrespective of their dimensions and power ratings. Its scope covers all layout variants of radial-flow turbines (e.g., Francis turbines), axial-flow turbines (e.g., Kaplan and propeller turbines), and diagonal-flow turbines. For runners fitted with adjustable blades, the internal mechanical parts of the blade pitch control mechanism fall outside the scope of this standard.

While many technical provisions within this standard can be applied to Pelton turbines, storage pumps and pump-turbines, this initial release does not address such equipment. Unique characteristics and relevant applicability criteria for Pelton units and pump-turbines will be incorporated and elaborated in a subsequent revision of the standard.
